Cut Through the Nonsense and Learn the Truth About Helping Children with Autism

If you Google the word "autism", you will get over 18 million hits. I have sorted through all the lies, hype and foolishness (including some of the ads you will see on edges of this page), and can provide you with solid, research based information on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Some of the nonsense you will find on line includes;

---Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) as a "cure" for autism; a $16,000 non-scientific waste of money.

---Vaccines containing thimerosol or other mercury-based preservatives; there is NO scientific support for this. It is unfortunate that autism tends to appear at about the same time children get their immunizations, but it is only a coincidence. In fact, I can show you DOZENS of scientific studies that DISPROVE the autism-mercury connection.

---Chelation therapy; more mercury-related nonsense.

---GFCF diets. The Gluten-Free, Casein-Free "autism diet" is also not scientifically valid. For every anecdotal case of the GFCF diet changing an autistic child's behavior in a dramatic manner, I can show you dozens of families who tried the diet, it worked for a while, then 4-8 weeks later the autistic behaviors returned. Again there is no scientific evidence to support this idea.

Things to Remember 

A growing list of reminders when working with children with autism

1. Avoid using jargon and idioms. Children with Autism often interpret language literally.

2. Don't insist on eye contact when talking with Autistic people. Many, especially those with Asperger's Syndrome, concentrate on what you are saying by NOT looking at you. Forcing them to make eye contact may actually break their concentration and weaken communication.

3. Repetition and routine are essential in helping autistic children feel safe.

4. A good place to start is to figure out what the non-verbal autistic person uses to show he/she is "happy" and "angry". An example would be hand flapping for "happy", and screaming for "unhappy".

5. There is no such thing as a "typical" autistic child. There is a range (a spectrum) of behaviors, abilities and ways to help the child learn.
